Thinking about visiting Hungary's beautiful capital this summer? If so, there is so much to see and do. Here's a quick run down of must do activities while there.
1- Be a culture vulture
Visit the parliamentary building in Budapest, the joint tallest building in the city. Get a guided tour of the ostentatious, gold ladened rooms for just 2000 HUF each (around £5). It can get busy though so book a time slot before you go to avoid disappointment online at:
Ruin pubs are all over Pest. Formally abandoned buildings have been reformed using recycled furniture into hip places to eat and drink. Szimpla is the most well known of the ruin pubs but one of the best is Ellátó Garden. They do great Mexican food in the back after dark, plus it's really cheap!
3- Try Pálinka!
Hungarians drink this moonshine by the boat load. Try a glass in the evening, watching the world go by in Erzsébet Square but be warned, it's not for the faint hearted.
4- Eat Lecsó
Pronounced Let-Cho, this ratatouille style dish is the perfect accompaniment to a meaty meal or as a dish itself containing Hungarian sausage. Hungarians love their paprika and this dish celebrates that fact. Proper Hungarian food can be found all over Budapest but one of the nicest meals we had was at Lugas, a restaurant just behind St Stephen's Basilica.
5- Check out the views
Climb to the top of St Stephen's Basilica for amazing panoramic views of the city. From here you can see the grand buildings of Buda as well as the Chain bridge.
